The Story
Children and adults view time differently, as Tosca, a small gray cat from New York, and her family, Poire (Pear) and Poireau (Leek), discover as they visit Paris on vacation.
After a morning of sightseeing, Tosca accepts an invitation to a puppet show in the park from a street-smart Parisian cat, Basho. They trot off without telling Poire and Poireau because Tosca assumes she'll be back before they notice she is gone.
Tosca and Basho's wanderings through the French capital take them on adventures to the Eiffel Tower and Nôtre Dame, while Poire and Poireau do everything they can, including going to the police and visiting a fortune teller, to locate their lost cat.
Before the family is reunited, Tosca has two adventures that test her courage and strength of character. And once they do find each other, Poire and Poireau must decide how to make sure Tosca doesn't get lost again.
Comments about the Book
"A charming read-aloud story illustrated in a sprightly and colorful manner. An especially happy choice for families with any sort of French connections." --Zilpha Keatley Snyder, author of 3 Newbery Honor Books
"Abby Wasserman has created a rare crossover book which, like the Babar stories, appeals equally to children and adults. Poire and Poireau and their adventuresome cat Tosca are instantly appealing, thanks in no small measure to the skillful and charming watercolors and to a text that matches the artwork perfectly. And to think that there will be further adventures of Poire, Poireau and Tosca---now that's something to look forward to! --Tom Clark, Berkeley
"The book is really one of the most beautiful books I have seen. I am so impressed with the illustrations and the story is lovely too. --Charlene Harrington, Ph.D., R.N., San Francisco
"Abby Wasserman's graphic and writing talents combine joyously in an illustrated tale about her two intelligent vegetable friends and their amazing feline, Tosca, on their 'tour de Paris.' Although allegedly written for children, adults also will delight in the author's whimsical imagination and pictorial skills." --Ramon Sender Barayón, San Francisco
"I was originally drawn to the book by Abby's wonderful illustrations--which you will love--but it turns out it is a great read too! A charming story that features two cats, animated produce and Paris--and happily no morals, no lessons, just an imaginative adventure. Très bien!" --Julia Nyman, owner of Apartment A, Mill Valley, CA
"This is the most elegant and intelligent children's book I have seen. TOSCA'S PARIS ADVENTURE is the first book I gave to my grandson and will give to my soon-to-be-born second grandchild. Besides enjoying the drawings and Tosca's adventures, they'll remember the French words for several vegetables and fruit, to boot." --Soo-Hi Nayer, Northern California
